This Tumblr blog by National Geographic has just started, and I am relishing the series of photographs that have been posted. The idea behind the blog appears to be to highlight photographs from what seems to be their deepest archives that may never have been exposed to the public through their publications until now. The photographs are old and in some instances quite raw. By that I mean they do not seem to have been subjested to any kind of “clean-up” process and more than a few are damaged, show dust or hair, and suffer from poor film quality. I find this quite appealing! It lends these photos a certain sense of reaching back from time, and confronting us with how clean and clinical modern digital photography can often be. I look forward to seeing more of these photos.
